New animal research laboratory condemned
Oxford University's new £20m animal research laboratory opened on Tuesday, amid widespread condemnation from animal advocates. Despite the refusal of officials to confirm the numbers, thousands of animals, including around a hundred macaques, are expected to be experimented upon. Animals Count opposes animal experimentation, particularly in the light of compelling evidence against the efficacy of such procedures.

Fishing greed threatens sharks and rays
At least a quarter of sharks and rays in the north-east Atlantic face extinction because of fishing, according to a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. US voters achieve electoral success for animals in California and Massachusetts
In addition to the Presidential elections, voters in two different states were able to vote on animal issues. In California, 63% of the voters passed Proposition Two, which effectively bans the caged confinement of veal calves, gestating pigs and egg-laying hens. In Massachusetts 57% of the voters would ban any dog racing that included betting or wagering, essentially putting out of business the state's two greyhound racetracks as of Jan. 1, 2010.

Today the European Commission finally adopted a proposal to update the Directive governing animal experimentation. Animals Count opposes experimentation not just on primates, but on all sentient creatures.

Another expose of shot unwanted greyhounds
The Times has again exposed a dodgy mechanism to get rid of unwanted greyhounds. A knacker's yard in Hertfordshire admitted killing a number of dogs a week using a bolt gun. According to greyhound industry rules, dogs should be put down only as a last resort and always by a vet. Animals Count is shocked to learn that yet again the industry is responsible for wholesale premature killing of sentient beings.

British Government criticised for ivory-trade support
The British Government has been criticised for its support of a UN-sanctioned auction of African ivory. Numerous scientists and conservationists have condemned the plan as a "death sentence" for the world's elephants. Animals Count abhors the sale of any ivory, which can only legitimise the notion that elephants are commodities to be utilised by people as seen fit, and condemns the government for its acquiescence.
