New animal research laboratory condemned
Oxford University's new £20m animal research laboratory opened on Tuesday, amid widespread condemnation from animal advocates. Despite the refusal of officials to confirm the numbers, thousands of animals, including around a hundred macaques, are expected to be experimented upon. Animals Count opposes animal experimentation, particularly in the light of compelling evidence against the efficacy of such procedures.

Fishing greed threatens sharks and rays
At least a quarter of sharks and rays in the north-east Atlantic face extinction because of fishing, according to a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The EU is seeking to protect a host of species by means of huge quota-reductions. Animals Count condemns the greed and compassionlessness of the fishing industry, and urges the EU to act decisively.

US voters achieve electoral success for animals in California and Massachusetts
In addition to the Presidential elections, voters in two different states were able to vote on animal issues. In California, 63% of the voters passed Proposition Two, which effectively bans the caged confinement of veal calves, gestating pigs and egg-laying hens. In Massachusetts 57% of the voters would ban any dog racing that included betting or wagering, essentially putting out of business the state's two greyhound racetracks as of Jan. 1, 2010.

PDSA adds weight to Crufts-opposition
The PDSA is the latest high-profile organisation to suspend involvement with the increasingly-maligned Crufts. The charity cited "unacceptable" breeding practices, leading to serious health issues for dogs. The move follows the recent withdrawals of support of the RSPCA, sponsor Pedigree, and the prospect of the termination of BBC transmission. Animals Count welcomes the PDSA decision.

Proposed EU ban on great ape experimentation
The legitimacy of primate-use in medical research will publicly be disputed in Brussels tomorrow, in the opening round of a battle between scientists, politicians and animal-rights campaigners, which could ultimately lead to an EU-wide ban on such experimentation. Today the European Commission finally adopted a proposal to update the Directive governing animal experimentation.

The Vegan reports on the Animal Welfare Act and quotes Jasmijn de Boo
Claire Barnes of The Vegan Society reviewed the effectiveness of the Animal Welfare Act, and asked whether this piece of legislation would mean an end to animal cruelty in the UK. She spoke to Jasmijn de Boo, who was skeptical about enforcement. Jasmijn said it is ludicrous that animal protection organisations seem to be mostly responsible for bringing cases to court. Government funding should be used instead to enforce the Act.

Animals party eyes City Hall seat (BBC News online)
While others focus on crime and transport, Jasmijn de Boo aims to be the first London Assembly member elected on an animal rights ticket.
Ms de Boo thinks she can attract votes from across the political spectrum, as well as enthusing those who are fed up with mainstream parties.
Animals Count calls for an NHS-style animal healthcare system and more "green corridors" for wildlife.
She is one of 10 people in the running for the Southwark and Lambeth seat.
Ms de Boo, 32, is the first person to stand in a UK election for the Animals Count party and hopes to pick up votes from disillusioned animal lovers.

The Independent article'Shooting season opens on Labour's huntsman'
On 10 September The Independent published an article based on our
press release, which can be found here.
Letter published in The Independent (14/09) 'Labour big guns under fire'
Sir: I thank Henry Deedes (Pandora, 10 September) for highlighting the fact that Martin Salter MP has seen fit to become a patron for a body which supports the shooting of animals for sport, a move which has been rightly attacked by Animals Count (who are not a "colourful outfit" but a serious and moderate political party with several seats in the Dutch parliament and now gaining a presence in the UK).
They echo the feeling of the vast majority of people in the UK, which is one of revulsion that any human being can gain pleasure in inflicting pain on living creatures. All political parties will soon have to wake up to the fact that their records on animal welfare are a key factor for many people when deciding for whom to vote at elections, partly because the key mainstream policies of the major parties have become quite similar, so people look to other deciding factors.
