New animal research laboratory condemned

wild macaquesOxford University's new £20m animal research laboratory opened on Tuesday, amid widespread condemnation from animal advocates. Despite the refusal of officials to confirm the numbers, thousands of animals, including around a hundred macaques, are expected to be experimented upon. Animals Count opposes animal experimentation, particularly in the light of compelling evidence against the efficacy of such procedures.

Fishing greed threatens sharks and rays

sharkAt least a quarter of sharks and rays in the north-east Atlantic face extinction because of fishing, according to a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The EU is seeking to protect a host of species by means of huge quota-reductions. Animals Count condemns the greed and compassionlessness of the fishing industry, and urges the EU to act decisively.

US voters achieve electoral success for animals in California and Massachusetts

battery cages in the USAIn addition to the Presidential elections, voters in two different states were able to vote on animal issues. In California, 63% of the voters passed Proposition Two, which effectively bans the caged confinement of veal calves, gestating pigs and egg-laying hens. In Massachusetts 57% of the voters would ban any dog racing that included betting or wagering, essentially putting out of business the state's two greyhound racetracks as of Jan. 1, 2010.
